Now let’s take a look at what craft I will be demonstrating that day. At first I was determined to do the clay flower pot because it’s one of my favorite things. After seeing the burlap canvas I made the jump over and decided that I was in the mood for a mixed media art project instead so I grabbed the three pack 8 x 11’s and here’s what I came up with.
What I love about Michaels is they have a ton of little accessories in coordinated colors which are perfect for this type of craft. I spent time going up and down the aisles piecing together pretty papers, paints and embellishments that would compliment each other.
My first one had a touch of spring fever in soft colors with butterflies as my subject. This one took about an hour to create and was simple to put together. I used Gesso which is like a thick white paint that seals the surface of your canvas and it can be mixed with other colors. All I did was randomly brush it across the burlap canvas in two colors and let dry while I cut out my paper butterflies.
I used stamps to add words and some ribbon and embellishments to build up the piece.
For my second burlap canvas art, I started with the paint but this time used decoupage glue to add the paper cut outs. This one took longer as building up the layers required drying time in between. But I think the extra work was worth it to get better results.
I kept the color scheme neutral and used several different prints that complimented the theme. It didn’t take long for the layers to dry but be patient and build them one at a time.
More paint went on after the glue was dry and then the cute accessories were hot glued on.
You don’t really have to know what the final design will look like with mixed media, it just unfolds as you create it. Choose your theme, ( bird, butterfly, flower, etc ) then your colors and go from there.
I have one more canvas left which I will do at the Pinterest Party on Feb.16th,1pm at the Langley Michaels so be sure to join me, I’d love to see what you come up with!
See you there!
