Is it too soon for Christmas decor Ideas? Nope…not if you’ve been eating, sleeping and breathing glitter like I have been for the last 3 months. As the lead decorator at Potter’s Nursery Christmas Store, I need to start decorating in July in order to be ready for our season and Cancer Fundraiser we have every October. Displays like this take months to create and a team of people to put it together.
May I say this: For those of you who thought I would only talk about plants all the time hence the word ‘Sow’ in my name…… this my gardenista friends…. is the ‘Dipity’ part of my web offering.
I have two green thumbs and glitter in my veins.
Themes are created way earlier on in the year so that we have plenty of time to get the props, products and building ( if necessary ) together. There’s still plenty of spontaneity though, some themes just ‘happen’ and other are created on the spot.
People are shocked when they walk into the nursery in August and see me decorating. They always ask…”Do you get sick of Christmas before December?” Here’s what I always say…” I don’t see it as Christmas, I see it as a project that I need to make beautiful…it could be a display of pumpkins or plants, doesn’t matter. When it feels like Christmas for me is when we start the amazing light show outside of the nursery….the Christmas music, the chilly winter air….that’s when I feel the holiday spirit come alive”
Where do my Christmas decor ideas come from? I am lucky to have a lot of incredible products to work with, but I do plan, plan, plan…you can’t decorate 28,000 square feet and have no idea how your going to tackle it.
But for the most part when I start a project ( like a themed tree, or Halloween display ), I have no idea how it will look when it’s done. I just know how I want it to ‘feel’. Creatives, artists, musicians don’t ever really know the outcome of their work when they begin….the music, art or creation flows through them and they end up with their masterpiece. That’s the only way I know how to describe it.
Take this owl tree for instance, I only had a few owls to work with. But as I wandered around the store grabbing picks, ribbon and balls….the whole theme came together. My advice is to pick a few key elements and stick with it. Load the tree up, make it full….but don’t stick everything you can find that fits the theme into the tree. Use a few big ornaments to create a dramatic effect. And peculiar things that you wouldn’t expect to see in a tree like stuffed animals or extra large pewter candlesticks.
One of the coolest products out there is Sinamay otherwise known as Decor Mesh. This White Princess is almost completely made out of this designer material. I use it in wreaths, trees and garlands for Christmas decor and in arbors, aisles and table dressings for Wedding decor.
I have plenty of tutorials around this site to check out, here’s the link to the holiday series I did last year. I have to admit that these tutorials are the very first I EVER recorded so they aren’t as ‘polished’ as the ones I did in spring. But they are informative and as soon as my latest tute for 2012 is complete, I’ll be sure to share….subscribe to my YouTube Channel so you don’t miss the latest releases.
Hope these Christmas decor ideas inspire you to create some holiday magic of your own and stay tuned for more updates as we get closer to Christmas.
